Mungo Park Architects submitted designs in an open ‘Architect and Artist’ competition. The brief called for the clear involvement of public art in the development of the proposed design. MPA’s team developed the concept of ‘Flow’ within the site design, and utilised their integrated approach to Landscape, Art and Architecture to develop forms that spoke of the town’s past, its geographical location at the centre of England, and the continual fluidity of movement over the site. A standing exhibition of local artists work was incorporated within the structural design of the scheme. Out of all the entries, the assessors described MPA’s submission as having the clearest integration of public art and architecture.
